Network security is the most fundamental element of information security as the systems, applications, and databases that reside on the network are beholden to the network to provide critical services they require, support their security objectives, and to ensure the security of the data they transit. Performing security due diligence at the network and systems layer is integral to ensuring the security of the enterprise as a whole.

The network's complexity, risk profile, and the importance of specific controls to reducing risk, are generally the predominant factors in determining which of the six activities outlined above are optimal to provide the entity with an appropriate level of assurance. The order they are presented in may or may not be the logical order that a particular situation/network may warrant.
